In 2026, Armona-Mar, Armona-Ria, Fuseta-Mar, Fuseta-Ria and, for the first time, Olhão Marina hold a Blue Flag. The bathing season ended on 30 September, so there are no lifeguards in October.

Short answer: in 2026 the municipality of Olhão has five Blue Flag sites. They are the Armona-Mar, Armona-Ria, Fuseta-Mar and Fuseta-Ria beaches, plus Olhão Marina, which made the list for the first time. The official bathing season on these beaches ran from 1 June to 30 September 2026, so in October there are no lifeguards on duty. The sand is still there, but you swim at your own risk.

Olhão's beaches and their 2026 awards

The municipality has five beaches: two on Armona Island, two at Fuseta and Praia dos Cavacos. The table brings together what the official 2026 lists say.

Site Where it is Blue Flag 2026 Gold Quality 2026 Other
Armona-Mar Armona Island, ocean side Yes Yes ZERO Pollution Beach
Armona-Ria Armona Island, lagoon side Yes Yes ZERO Pollution Beach
Fuseta-Mar Island facing Fuseta, ocean side Yes Yes ZERO Pollution Beach
Fuseta-Ria Fuseta, lagoon side Yes No Accessible Beach
Praia dos Cavacos Mainland, east of Olhão No Yes No lifeguard
Olhão Marina Olhão Yes (first time) Not applicable

The Blue Flag is awarded in Portugal by ABAAE, the national Blue Flag operator. Gold Quality (Qualidade de Ouro) comes from the conservation charity Quercus. The Accessible Beach award belongs to the national "Praia Acessível, Praia para Todos!" programme, and the ZERO Pollution Beach label comes from the environmental group ZERO, according to Olhão Council.

What each flag actually means

Blue Flag. It is not just about the water. ABAAE also looks at environmental information and education, environmental management, safety and services, which is why a marina can earn one too.

Gold Quality. This one is purely about the water. Quercus uses the official analyses from the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) and requires a consistent record of good results over several years, with an "Excellent" rating in the latest season. There is no application process: either the numbers are there or they are not. That is how Praia dos Cavacos holds Gold Quality without a Blue Flag.

ZERO Pollution Beach. According to the council, no microbiological contamination at all was detected at Armona-Mar, Armona-Ria or Fuseta-Mar in the samples taken during the 2023, 2024 and 2025 bathing seasons.

Accessible Beach. Fuseta-Ria has held this award since 2007. The council lists step-free pedestrian access, reserved disabled parking bays, a level ramp down to the bathing area, boardwalks across the sand and an amphibious wheelchair for swimmers with reduced mobility.

Olhão Marina: a first for 2026

Olhão Marina appears on the 2026 Blue Flag list and was not on the 2024 or 2025 lists. It is not a place to swim: here the flag recognises environmental management, information and services for people arriving by boat. For locals, it is a welcome nod to the town's waterfront.

October: the bathing season is over

Portaria no. 204-A/2026/1, published in the Diário da República on 30 April, sets the 2026 bathing season for Olhão's five designated bathing waters (Armona-Mar, Armona-Ria, Cavacos, Fuseta-Mar and Fuseta-Ria) from 1 June to 30 September. The same order ties lifeguard cover to that period, so outside it there is no guaranteed lifeguard service.

Praia dos Cavacos has no lifeguard and has not had one in recent years, despite its Gold Quality award. The order does not even list it as a supervised bathing beach, so here you always swim at your own risk, even in high summer.

In practice, you can still go to the beach and swim in October, just without anyone watching. The 2026 flags refer to the season that has now ended.

Getting to each beach

  • Armona-Ria and Armona-Mar: scheduled ferry from Olhão's pier. By October the winter timetable is in force, with fewer crossings. Check times on our ferries page and plan your day with the Armona Island guide.
  • Fuseta-Mar: boat from Fuseta, which runs to its own timetable. More on our Fuseta page.
  • Fuseta-Ria: on the village side of the lagoon, no boat needed.
  • Praia dos Cavacos: on the mainland, east of the town. There is no lifeguard at any time of year.

Culatra and Farol: next door, but in Faro

You catch the boat to Culatra and Farol from Olhão (the same boat stops at Culatra and carries on to Farol), but those beaches belong to the municipality of Faro. On the official 2026 lists, Culatra-Mar and Ilha do Farol-Mar hold both the Blue Flag and Gold Quality, and their bathing season also ran from 1 June to 30 September.

Tips for a beach day in October

  • Check the last boat back before you set off. In winter the final crossing is early: check the times on our ferries page.
  • No lifeguards means choosing your spot with care. The lagoon side is usually calmer than the ocean side, but tidal currents still matter. Never swim alone.
  • Bring water and food. Out of season, do not assume beach bars and kiosks will be open.
  • Dogs: the council points out that the coastal management plan bans dogs from beaches during the bathing season (guide dogs excepted). Out of season, check the rules with the council before you bring yours.
  • Water quality: the official rating for each bathing water is published on Info Água, the APA's portal.
  • Plan B: if the weather turns, have a look at things to do in Olhão.
