Fuseta-Ria beach is right in the village, so you can walk there without a boat; Fuseta-Mar is on Fuseta Island, the eastern tip of Armona, and you reach it by ferry from Fuseta pier. The official ferry timetable only covers May to October, and in October boats leave every half hour from 9:10 to 17:30.

The short answer

Fuseta has two beaches with the same name and two very different ways in. Fuseta-Ria sits at the foot of the village, in a sandy cove facing the Ria Formosa lagoon: you walk or drive there, no boat needed. Fuseta-Mar is on what locals call Fuseta Island, which is really the eastern tip of Armona Island, directly opposite the village. To get there you take the ferry from Fuseta pier, next to the Ria beach. It is a short crossing that winds through channels between mudflats and salt marsh.

Both beaches hold a Blue Flag for 2026. Fuseta-Ria is also certified as an Accessible Beach, and Fuseta-Mar carries the Gold Quality Flag, awarded for excellent bathing water.

Fuseta-Ria: the village beach

This is a sandy beach in a sheltered inlet of the lagoon, with calm, warm water. That makes it a favourite with families with small children. At low tide, creeks and mudflats appear where you can spot crabs, shellfish and wading birds feeding in the mud. If you wander out, watch where you step and take care not to disturb the clam beds.

What you need to know:

  • Access on foot or by car along a paved road from the village.
  • Parking is plentiful and organised next to the ferry pier, except on market days, when it gets tight.
  • Facilities: a restaurant, toilets and lifeguards during the bathing season.
  • Accessible Beach, the best option in the municipality for anyone with reduced mobility or pushing a buggy.
  • At the western end you will see a building on stilts: it is an old lifeboat station.

Fuseta Island and Fuseta-Mar beach

Once off the boat, cross the dunes and you are on the ocean-facing beach. The landscape is mostly wild: storms in 2010 reshaped this strip of sand and the old holiday cottages were lost. The beach facilities have since been rebuilt.

About 1.5 km to the east is Barra Nova, an inlet opened artificially after those storms. The stretch of sand between the new inlet and the site of the old one is called Barra Nova beach: an almost empty strand with natural pools at low tide.

Two important rules:

  • Currents near the inlet are usually very strong. Do not swim close to it.
  • Only cross the dunes on the boardwalks. You are inside the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the dunes are what hold the island together.

Fuseta ferry timetable

The official timetable is published by Olhão Council and only covers May to October. It does not state a year and warns that times can shift with the tides. In short:

  • May and October: every half hour, first boat from Fuseta at 9:10 and last at 17:30. The last return from the island is at 17:45.
  • 1 to 18 June and 18 to 30 September: every 15 minutes, 9:00 to 18:45.
  • 19 to 30 June and 1 to 17 September: every 15 minutes, 9:00 to 18:45.
  • July and August: every 5 to 10 minutes, 8:30 to 19:55, with the last return at 20:05.

According to Visit Olhão, at the height of summer the service runs according to how many people turn up at the pier. See the full table and today's boats on our island ferries page.

What about November to April?

There is no published timetable for the Fuseta ferry from November to April. Visit Olhão says that in April and May boats usually run hourly, but there is no official winter table. If you want to visit the island out of season, ask at Fuseta pier on the day before you rely on a boat back.

The alternative is a water taxi: Visit Olhão confirms that sea taxi and aqua taxi services operate from Fuseta and Olhão, 24 hours a day, always by prior booking. There is no official list of operators or fares, so agree the price before you board.

Fuseta-Ria beach, of course, is there all year round and needs no boat at all.

Getting to Fuseta

  • By train: Fuseta has a station on CP's Algarve line. From Olhão the journey takes around 10 minutes. Check the CP timetable before you set off.
  • By car: park in the car park by the ferry pier, which serves both beaches. There are fewer spaces on market days.
  • By boat from Olhão: there is no direct boat between Olhão and Fuseta Island; the only way over is from Fuseta pier. Boats from Olhão pier go to Armona, at the far end of the same island.

Practical tips

  • Check the tide before you go: at low water Fuseta-Ria changes completely and Barra Nova has natural pools.
  • In October the island day ends early: the last boat back is at 17:45. Do not get caught out.
  • Take water and sun cream if you head for Barra Nova: it is a deserted stretch of sand, so bring everything you need.
  • With small children, Fuseta-Ria is the easier choice: calm water and everything close by.
